Why Los Blancos Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.
"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official full international.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
