UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
