The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
