Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Humiliation
Arne Slot conceded that it was expected for doubts to be raised about his position following another convincing defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in 12 games, representing the club's poorest streak after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough evening at their home ground.
“I feel secure, things are alright, I've received a lot of backing from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It would be great to reverse this trend and earn three points of course but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I accept my role. It is not the first time I’ve been in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Discussions with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his conversations with the team officials, the head coach revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and for me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me every single minute each day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “In the normal conversations we have I sense the belief. But I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so it remains to be seen.”
Persistent Problems and Player Response
Slot expressed regret over known failings from his squad in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger internally. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He continued, “It's tough because I’m playing for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a phase of this nature with results this poor.”
He concluded, “But we still have the emblem on our chest. And as long as that badge is removed, we'll continue to compete.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all once more what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“However currently, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
