Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
