Anthony Barry Reveals His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, Anthony Barry was playing for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His path from athlete to trainer commenced through volunteering with the youth team. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his destiny.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the top according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their methods include psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the England collective and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he states. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We have to spend time communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This is the time to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that the style of play ought to embody all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to increase tempo through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, as his cohort included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he sought out the most challenging environments he could find to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

He completed the course as the best in his year, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. English football's governing body view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
