‘A Man Who Will Be Deeply Missed’: Meg Ryan Posts Emotional Tribute to Director Rob Reiner
Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the late filmmaker Rob Reiner, who directed her in the hit romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
A Devastating Incident
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles over the weekend.
“How we will long for this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Charges Filed
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan added. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy issued words today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They were more than parents; they were our closest confidants.”
Colleagues and Friends Remember
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner through a message shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” the tribute noted. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”
A Lasting Cinematic Legacy
When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner was introduced to Michele Singer Reiner during the production of When Harry Met Sally. The pair were brought together by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.
Reiner’s celebrated filmography comprised classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
